Reading Text for Questions 15–19

During the nineteenth century, women in the United States organized and participated in a large number of reform movement, including movements to reorganize the prison system, improve education, ban the sale of alcohol, and most importantly, to free the slaves. Some women saw similarities in the social status of women and slaves. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucy Stone were feminists and abolitionists who supported the rights of both women and blacks. A number of male abolitionists, including William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Philips, also supported the rights of women to speak and participate equally with men in anti-slavery activities. Probably more than any other movement, abolitionism offered women previously denied entry into politics. They became involved primarily in order to better their living conditions and the conditions of others.

When the Civil War ended in 1865, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution adopted. In 1868 and 1870 granted citizenship and suffrage to blacks but not to women. Discouraged but resolved, feminists influenced more and more women to demand the right to vote. In 1869–6 Wyoming Territory had yielded to demands by feminists, but eastern states resisted more stubbornly than before. A women’s suffrage bill had been presented to every Congress since 1878 but it continually failed to pass until 1920, when the Nineteenth Amendment granted women the right to vote.

Soal 15

When were women allowed to vote throughout the United States?

A. In 1865

B. After 1868

C. After 1870

D. After 1878

E. After 1920

Answer & Analysis

Key: E

Detailed analysis: The passage states that the women’s suffrage bill “continually failed to pass until 1920, when the Nineteenth Amendment granted women the right to vote.” This indicates nationwide voting rights came in 1920. Therefore, “After 1920” is the best answer.

Option check:

A is incorrect because 1865 is only the end of the Civil War, not the year women gained the vote.

B and C are incorrect because 1868 and 1870 granted citizenship and suffrage to blacks, but not to women.

D is incorrect because 1878 is when the suffrage bill began being presented repeatedly, but it still failed.

E is correct because nationwide voting rights were granted in 1920; this is \(\gt\) all earlier dates mentioned.

Soal 16

What is mainly discussed in the second paragraph?

A. The process of giving right to vote to women.

B. The effects of the civil war.

C. The right to vote to black people.

D. The nineteenth amendment.

E. The Wyoming Territory.

Answer & Analysis

Key: A

Detailed analysis: The second paragraph traces the development toward women’s voting rights: it mentions the Civil War’s end, the 14th and 15th Amendments (excluding women), feminist efforts, Wyoming Territory’s early action, repeated congressional bills, and finally the 19th Amendment in 1920. That sequence is essentially “the process of giving the right to vote to women.”

Why other options are weaker:

B is too broad: the paragraph uses the Civil War as a starting point, but the focus is voting rights, not general war effects \(\lt\) A.

C is partial: black suffrage is mentioned, but mainly as contrast (blacks received it, women did not).

D is only the ending point of the paragraph, not the whole main discussion.

E is just one supporting example (a territory that yielded in 1869), not the main idea.

Soal 17

What is the topic of the passage primarily concerned with?

A. Abolitionists

B. The civil war

C. Women's suffrage

D. The Wyoming Territory

E. The Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendment

Answer & Analysis

Key: C

Detailed analysis: The passage describes women’s reform participation, how abolitionism opened political involvement, and then the long struggle leading to women receiving the right to vote in 1920. The central theme from start to finish is women’s suffrage (women’s voting rights), while the other topics serve as supporting background.

Option check:

A is included, but abolitionists are discussed mainly because they supported women’s rights.

B is a historical marker, not the main topic.

C is correct and \(\gt\) the others because it covers both paragraphs as one unified idea.

D is only one example mentioned briefly.

E is discussed as part of the struggle but not the passage’s overall focus.

Soal 18

According to the passage, why did women become active in politics?

A. To be elected to public office

B. To be famous throughout the world

C. To amend the Declaration of Independence

D. To support Elizabeth Cady Stanton for president

E. To improve the condition of life that existed at the time bill had been presented to

Answer & Analysis

Key: E

Detailed analysis: The first paragraph concludes: “They became involved primarily in order to better their living conditions and the conditions of others.” This directly matches the idea of improving life conditions. Therefore E is the best fit, even though the wording is awkward.

Option check:

A is not stated; the motive given is improving conditions, not seeking office.

B is irrelevant and not supported.

C is not mentioned.

D is not mentioned and is historically implausible within the text’s focus.

E is correct because it aligns with “better their living conditions,” which is \(\gt\) any political ambition implied by other options.

Soal 19

“A women’s suffrage bill had been presented to ... (paragraph 2).”

The closest meaning to the underlined word is ...

A. freedom from slavery

B. the right to vote

C. citizenship

D. expectation

E. pain

Answer & Analysis

Key: B

Detailed analysis: In the passage, “suffrage” is directly connected to voting rights: the paragraph ends by saying the Nineteenth Amendment granted women “the right to vote.” Thus “women’s suffrage bill” means a bill about women’s right to vote.

Option check:

A relates to abolition, not the meaning of “suffrage.”

B is correct: suffrage = the right to vote.

C (citizenship) is related historically, but the text distinguishes citizenship/suffrage for blacks and emphasizes voting rights for women; meaning is \(\lt\) B.

D and E are unrelated meanings.
