Text 4 (for Questions 11–15)

Uday and Qusay are killed and the delighted British and American governments suggest that Iraq will be a safer place. Yes, the Iraqis may well feel safer. And - with the dictator's brutal sons out of the way forever more confident about continuing the resistance against the American occupiers.

Shortly before their deaths were announced, Richard Gephardt, Democratic presidential hopeful, delivered a blistering attack on Bush's foreign policy which was driven, he said, by "machismo" and "arrogant unilateralism". Bush, he continued, had treated U.S. allies "like so many flies on America's windshield". He added: "Foreign policy isn't a John Wayne movie."

The attack on the villa where Saddam's sons were hiding might be seen as driving home the point; instead, the announcement that they had been killed by the U.S. troops in a shoot-out is welcomed by Tony Blair as "great news".

Note (required symbols): \( 2 \gt 1 \) and \( 1 \lt 2 \).

Soal 11

The text mainly discusses about …

A. Uday and Qusay who killed U.S. troops

B. Uday and Qusay who are killed by U.S. troops

C. Richard Gephardt who attacked Bush's domestic policy

D. the attack on the villa where Saddam Husein was hiding

E. Tony Blair who is welcomed by Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay

Answer & Analysis

Key: B

Analysis: The passage opens by stating that Uday and Qusay have been killed and then describes reactions and related political commentary. The later paragraph explicitly mentions they “had been killed by the U.S. troops in a shoot-out.” Therefore, the central topic is the killing of Uday and Qusay by U.S. troops and the responses to it.

A. Incorrect: the text says Uday and Qusay are killed, not that they killed U.S. troops.

B. Correct: it matches the repeated focus—announcement of their deaths and that U.S. troops killed them.

C. Incorrect: Gephardt attacks Bush’s foreign policy, not domestic policy, and this is supporting context, not the main topic.

D. Incorrect focus: the villa is mentioned, but it is part of the account of how the deaths happened; the main discussion is the deaths and reactions.

E. Incorrect and illogical: Tony Blair welcomes the news; he is not “welcomed by Saddam’s sons.”

Soal 12

The main idea of paragraph \( 3 \) is that …

A. U.S. troops killed Saddam in the attack on the villa.

B. Uday and Qusay had killed U.S. troops and Tony Blair.

C. Tony Blair attacked the villa where Saddam's sons were hiding.

D. Saddam was killed by Tony Blair and U.S. in Saddam's sons' villa.

E. The announcement of Saddam's sons' death is welcomed by Tony Blair.

Answer & Analysis

Key: E

Analysis: Paragraph \( 3 \) says the attack on the villa might “drive home the point,” but then emphasizes that the announcement of their being killed by U.S. troops is welcomed by Tony Blair as “great news.” The key idea is Blair’s reaction to the announcement.

A. Incorrect: the paragraph does not say Saddam was killed; it says Saddam’s sons were killed.

B. Incorrect and nonsensical: it never states they killed U.S. troops, and it certainly does not involve killing Tony Blair.

C. Incorrect: Blair did not attack the villa; U.S. troops did.

D. Incorrect: Saddam is not said to be killed, and Blair is not part of the shoot-out.

E. Correct: it directly restates the concluding focus of paragraph \( 3 \).

Soal 13

Which statement is correct according to the text?

A. John Wayne movie was presented to Bush arrogantly.

B. Tony Blair received the "great news" of Bush and Gephardt's death.

C. John Wayne was a movie star who attacked the villa of Saddam's sons.

D. Richard Gephardt attacked Bush's foreign policy after Uday and Qusay's death.

E. The news of Uday and Qusay's death made the British and American government pleased.

Answer & Analysis

Key: E

Analysis: The first paragraph explicitly mentions “the delighted British and American governments” after Uday and Qusay are killed. This supports option E. Other options either introduce incorrect details (John Wayne presented, Bush/Gephardt death) or reverse timing inaccurately.

A. Incorrect: “Foreign policy isn’t a John Wayne movie” is a metaphor, not an event of presenting a movie to Bush.

B. Incorrect: no one says Bush and Gephardt died; “great news” refers to Saddam’s sons being killed.

C. Incorrect: John Wayne is referenced as a movie metaphor; he did not attack any villa.

D. Incorrect: the text says “shortly before their deaths were announced,” meaning Gephardt’s attack occurred before the announcement.

E. Correct: it directly matches “the delighted British and American governments.”

Soal 14

A. raid

B. resist

E. withdraw

Answer & Analysis

Key: A

Analysis: In this context, “attack on the villa” means an armed assault/action against a place. The closest synonym among the choices is “raid,” which refers to a sudden attack, often by military or police.

A. Correct: “raid” matches a sudden, targeted attack on a location.

B. Incorrect: “resist” means oppose, not attack.

C. Incorrect: “shield” means protect.

D. Incorrect: “defend” is the opposite action.

E. Incorrect: “withdraw” means pull back.

Soal 15

C. U.S. troops

D. John Wayne

Key: C

Analysis: The passage states: “the announcement that they had been killed by the U.S. troops in a shoot-out …” Therefore, the subject of “had killed Uday and Qusay” is U.S. troops.
